Although by today’s Hollywood standard (which in my opinion, are very low) this film may seem slow, sombre and boring, I found it to be entirely riveting. Resembling the films of Ingmar Bergman, with emphasis on long cinematic shots (the cinematography is breathtakingly beautiful) and minimalist, but evocative and impactful dialogue, this is a film well worth watching. From beginning to end, it’s existential tone and themes on the depravity and nobility of the human spirit are simple, grab you on a visceral level and are thought provoking. No need for quick, jerky shots or an overabundance of gratuitous violence and meaningless dialogue here. It’s plain, simple and direct. If you like “cinema”…you’ll love this...

is it slow yes, thats what real story building can do, did it drag a little, yes! But keep in mind that this isn't for the "New" American Audience who need action within the first 30 seconds. The story line is amazing and if you love true art and a great story building movie, this is for you. This movie isn't for you if: 1) you are unable to wait 3 minutes for popcorn to pop in the microwave pass this one up. 2) if you only read books that have pictures in it, and get bored with books that only have words, this isn't for you

I know this is based on a German Novella, but actually the John Cusack western did a better job with the story for American viewers. Rent The Jack Bull instead. Its probably cheeper and is easier to follow than the french princess's duplicity.
