Description

Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre, rose to national attention as the reluctant but never shy voice of the riot grrrl movement. She became one of the most famously outspoken feminist icons, a cultural lightning rod. Her critics wished she would just shut-up, and her fans hoped she never would. So in 2005, when Hanna stopped shouting, many wondered why. Through 20 years of archival footage and intimate interviews with Hanna, THE PUNK SINGER takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and offers a never-before-seen view into the life of this fearless leader.

This is something I started to watch but didn't continue it cause I was tired of documentaries that were getting to rebellious. It's a great singer song writer materials and for those who love punk culture.

This is such an important story that needs to be seen and heard. Well documented, shot and put together. Really opened my eyes and mind to the story of Kathleen Hanna and the contribution she has made to American culture, music and human rights and freedom.

I went into this "cold". Meaning I had no real knowledge of Kathleen Hanna or Riot Grrl in general. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and learned a lot. So those reviewers who claimed that this film was only for her "cult followers" are wrong. I wish I could get prints of the artwork shown. Not to mention a copy of the Julie Ruin album.

I had only started listening to Kathleen’s first band Bikini Kill when I watched this documentary. I had no idea that she was such a charismatic, powerful artist, and thanks to this documentary I now have a new idol. What those women did during the Riot Girrrl movement of the 90’s needs to happen again. Also as an aspiring musician it was incredible to see someone who is so voraciously involved in creating music. Her passion in palpable.
