Description

Each Christmas, an industrial tycoon and his family travel from New York City to Florida to spend the holiday season in the sun, and while they are gone, a philosophical homeless man takes up residence in the millionaire's Fifth Avenue mansion. Letting himself in through a hole in the fence, he puts on designer clothes, smokes expensive cigars, eats gourmet food, and opens up the townhouse to his homeless friends so that they, too, can share in the holiday spirit. When the real homeowner's daughter returns to NYC early and discovers the house has been taken over, the homeless haven is in danger of disappearing forever. However, the warmhearted nature of the homeless intruders reinvigorates the unhappy wealthy family, and everyone succumbs to the true spirit of Christmas. Starring Victor Moore ("Swing Time," "The Seven Year Itch"), Academy Award-nominee Ann Harding ("Holiday," "When Ladies Meet") and Emmy Award-nominee Charles Ruggles ("Bringing Up Baby," "The Parent Trap").

Stumbled upon this movie several years ago and I love it. Good, clean fun and a great message. The actors are wonderful and the movie is all what Christmas means to me - loving others and enjoying the time together.

We love old classic Christmas movies. We stumbled on the old gem and absolutely loved it. It is as refreshing as Christmas in Connecticut or White Christmas.

I watch this every year around the holidays. Comedic cases of mistaken identities. Hobo moves into a rich man’s nyc fifth ave home when the wealthy leave for the winter. Post WWII soldier down on his luck is taken in by the Hobo now staying in the mansion. Millionaire’s daughter shows up and hijinks ensue. Movie buffs will recognize the rich man as the grandfather from the original “Parent Trap.”

This is a sweet — and sometimes silly -- holiday film about an oddball group of homeless people, and how they come to be together in a ‘borrowed’ house over the holidays. The star of the show is Charles Ruggles, who’s character’s refined and wacky philosophy, teaches a lesson in living life simply while hurting no one, and leaving things just as you found them. His quiet dignity at the end of the film is charming. It’s not a great film, it’s no “The Man Who Came to Dinner,” but it is an entertaining one that we enjoy watching every year. (Note: pay attention to the incongruous blackened eye brows on Ruggles and Harding. It’s kind of fun to watch them appear and disappear!)
