Loved it! I especially liked the beautiful ending which was so sweet and tender. I'm thankful that the classics are still available because if it wasn't for them there would be nothing for me to rent.
  • One of the best films / terrible transfer

WARNER BROTHERS! AT&T! SOMEBODY! Please put a good transfer up somewhere!!!!!!!!!! What a bummer. There are better transfers of this film out. I watched it on filmstruck before at&t shut it down and the transfer was gorgeous. I have no idea why they would put this one up for sale. This film is up there with the greatest films of all time and should be treated as such.

A perfectly lovely movie, with well-written and acted characters. I especially love the pre-WWII innocence & charm of it all; Sullavan & Stewart are delightful. It’s one of my favorites & a must-see during every holiday season.
  • Wonderful movie but substandard print

This is absolutely one of the greatest comedy, romance, Christmas movies. In fact, it’s hard not describe it on superlatives. Unfortunately, it is only available in SD, and in what appears to be a pretty substandard VHS rip. The current DVD release that Warner’s has out is of much higher quality.
  • Semi-charming but not first rate

The story is told in a fairly unpolished fashion, bumbling along without much direction and not very artfully done. While acknowledging the half centuty of differences in circumstance, Nora Ephron's You've Got Mail was exactly the right way to do it. As for the setting, this movie clearly was in the queue for a long time before they made it, as rather than being a charming "old country" movie, it was released two years after Hungary had allied itself with Hitler. Frankly, I am astonished that they did not change the setting to someplace more appropriate. In hindsight, it is hard to think of the characters enduring what was to come, with Germany taking over in 1944 and the USSR after that - and particularly considering that Hungary had participated in the Nazi invasion of the USSR. Context aside, this movie is okay, but there is a reason it has maintained such a low profile over the years. This is not a major classic, but the kind of film that is, as it is, distributed by TCM.

Classic Jimmy Stewart emotional appeal. Quite slow beginning that becomes compelling the more one watches.

Classic Rom Com set in a Budapest gift shop filled with wonderful characters. The editing is done to perfection. Margaret Sullavan plays it a little over the top, but James stewart is spot on. It plays out well and ends perfectly.

One of my favorite movies to watch no matter what time of the year. I like that You've Got Mail was based off this movie in some parts and they also used In The Good Old Summertime. James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan make a great on screen couple. A must see film if you love the classics.

Such a likable film! I just watched it for the first ime and I would have a hard time saying which is better- this original 1940 version, or the 1998 remake. Jimmy Stewart shows his finest sensitive acting skills here and Margaret Sullavan is both cute and smart. :) Wonderful acting all around, and a clever, engaging story that had me laughing hard at some moments and tearing up at others. Highly recommended!

I've come to think that The Shop Around the Corner ranks with The Philadelphia Story, It's A Wonderful Life, and Casablanca as one of the finest films of the forties. It's wittty, romantic, and cleverly plotted, and the minor characters are wonderful. It's also one of James Stewart's finest roles; his is a fully-rounded character, and so is Margaret Sullavan's.
