  • Full Version is Better

The version I watched when I was younger was longer and had more scenes this thing has been cut. Extremely frustrating, but I don’t see y’all doing anything about it. You got your money and that’s all y’all really care about.
  • At least its another Peckinpah

To be honest, this is a butchered version of a bigger picture. The Extended 165/166 minute cut is much better in many ways. That said this was Peckinpah's training ground for The Wild Bunch and you see the evolution of slomo action and violence.

The film's pushing 50 years old, so I expected some clichés. And got a lot. What I didn't bargain for was the total disregard for military reality: a commanding officer who digs graves while his men watch, a guerrilla unit (in 1864, mind you) of white and African-American Union soldiers that's more than half Confederate POWs, and battles where a good number get killed, but nobody stresses out. Flower power in uniform, I guess, and the high hopes of the first years of the Civil Rights movement. The problem is that you can't believe a single one of the characters takes the situation seriously. I stopped about halfway through, thanking my stars I only rented. If this is actually the uncensored, longer version, the short one would be better. Anything at all you cut from this would lessen the tedium.

....this appears to be the severely truncated version, slashed by the studio shortly after the film's initial release. There is at least one version, which did in fact come out in 2005, that runs 136 minutes. All, essentially, consider it superior. Why doesn't iTunes have it? Or, why is this iTunes version listed as being released in 2005, creating more confusion?
