Description

Academy Award-winning psychological thriller stars Oscar-winner Ingrid Bergman ("Casablanca," "Anastasia") as a newlywed unaware that her seemingly charming husband, Charles Boyer ("Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse"), is a crazed murderer. After they move into her family's Victorian mansion, he schemes to drive her insane while he searches for a hidden cache of rubies. Chilling and suspenseful, it was nominated for Best Picture and Script. Bergman earned a well-deserved Oscar for her performance as the vulnerable heroine. Boyer and teenage Angela Lansbury (TV's "Murder, She Wrote," "National Velvet") each received nominations. Directed by the great Oscar-winner George Cukor ("My Fair Lady," "The Philadelphia Story"). With Joseph Cotton ("Citizen Kane," "The Magnificent Ambersons") and Oscar-nominee Dame May Whitty ("Mrs. Miniver").

I am astounded that, in 1944, Hollywood could script the precise behavior & manipulation patterns of narcissism & the effects on a good soul. 👍. Well done! Be sure to watch all the relationship interactions & results carefully. It was riveting!

Bastard is the word that comes to comes to mind every time i watch Charles Boyer carry out his diabolical plot; talk about your emotional terrorist, Boyer's character has no equal. My heart weeped for poor Ingrid and beat a little faster every time Joseph Cotton was on screen. I discovered this movie when my former manager asked a coworker if he was trying to "gaslight" her. We both asked what she meant and she told us to watch the movie-I've been thanking her ever since. This {1944 version) is my favorite movie. The acting is superb, the story riveting and I guarantee you will be watching it again and again.

I can't say enough about this movie!! LOVED IT!! I was a little creeped out by it at first, but hey, that's the risk you take when you watch it! SO worth it though!! Charles Boyer playing the handsome, very romantic creep *gasp* (at least at the creep part) and Joseph Cotton.......(sighs)...must I say more? Ingrid Bergman-what a performance!! Amazing! Definitely deserved the award for Best Actress and with the film's other awards I don't think you can knock it! Enjoy! Don't watch it alone-believe me!

Ingrid plays a young women being slowly driven insane by her charming but devious new husband. Ingrind definitely deserved her "Best Actress Oscar" for this peformance--she was perfect, and Charles Boyer was chilling and creepy as her murderous husband. This movie is one you won't forget--and will want to watch again just to see Ingrid's performance.

Some acclaimed films of years past don't hold up well in modern times. That can not be said of Gaslight. Nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1944, within the first ten minutes it's abundantly clear why. The story is tight, engaging and mysterious, most of which can be attributed to Ingrid Bergman who won the films sole Oscar. She more than deserves it for giving the hard to believe Paula a palpable sadness that overcomes her sometimes incomprehensible behavior. The film is shot beautifully and has a lot of play with shadow which shows heavy German impressionistic influences. Gaslight is not to be missed by anyone who enjoys an exceptionally well made thriller/suspense/mystery.
