I like old westerns, but I didn't like this. Visually, it is stunning, but I struggled to watch this, and I will definitely never watch it again.

One of the great scores of all time and Itunes has decided to edit it and cut the amazing Overture, Intermission and Exit music. Buyers beware of iTunes ......better to buy it on VUDU or Amazon...you can see the uncut version!
  • The Ultimate Western Classic

This is the definitive western of the 20th century. This includes the requisite song and dance number that was standard at the time, but beyond that, it is an amazing film that tells a multi-generational story and with a string of A-list actors. It is very similar to the sweeping epic stories of James Michener and, like Michener's works, it gives you a sense of history. Frankly, if James Stewart's character had would up in Texas, this would have been a brilliant prequel to Lonesome Dove.
  • GREAT PICTURE BUT MUTILATED BY APPLE

This is a very great picture and the Warner Brothers restoration is magnificent. But this version offered by iTunes cuts out the two overtures, chops off the end of part 1 with the intermission card, cuts out the music that ends part 1, and eliminates the exit music. Except for iTunes, this picture has never been offered in this mutilated form. What is the purpose of these cuts,Mayen iTunes offers other pictures (like Cleopatra) fully intact? This is simply dishonest because it offers a movie in a distorted form when it wouldn't cost iTunes one penny more to offer it intact.

Alot of great actors playing bit roles in this western saga. None of them get to sink thier teeth into thier characters. The film tries to hard to cover too much. Good cinemtoghpy though.

If you can ever see it in the original format in a cinerama theatre, Seattle or LA, do it. Way before imax or CG , the buffalo stampede Is still amazing- real Buffaloes and real people
  • Where is the Smilebox version

I’ve saw this movie last year at the Cinerama Dome in the correct Cinerama format. Super Awesome! There is no comparison between that experience and seeing this movie flattened. It’s almost as bad as pan and scan! (younger readers can google that term) There is a blue ray version which includes the look of Cinerama (Smilebox) so I won’t be purchasing this version from the Itunes store until they have all the Cinerama movies in Smilebox so I can see them again as the director intended. Apple is usually on the cutting edge with excellent transfers, in the original format, but I think they “missed the boat” this time. Come on Apple, you can do this!

Wish today's movies were as clean and wholesome with the moral fabric that this nation is built on.

I’ve watched this movie for as long as I can remember. This movie has an all-star cast including the great Spencer Tracy doing the narration. With 3 great directors,John Ford, Henry Hathaway, George Marshall and Alfred Newman’s awesome score, this is a must see movie for every generation of movie lovers.

One of the regrets i had over the years was that this fine ;piece of work had deteriorated over the years- and that perhaps a "virgin" copy hadn't been salted away. This was the first Cinerama movie and although the Cinerama wrap around effect was just OK- even then- the movie itself was great. A well done major compression of a lot of history- done 60s style (means not real accurate) but very entertaining. THIS restoration is just what this movie needs.
