Great all around -- the score is magnificent, the cast, the acting, the cinematography. This movie gave the series the shot in the arm it needed after the disappointing "Hannibal." Ralph Fiennes does a brilliant job of playing a disturbed, terrifying character who you also can't help but feel sorry for. He was perfectly cast. A lot of people like to draw comparisons between this film and Michael Mann's Manhunter. Both are great but this outperforms it in many ways and it has little to do with Hopkins reprising his role as Dr. Lector. Give this movie a chance with an open mind. You will not be disappointed.
  • Tony Hopkins is terrific, as always

Now I know a lot of people will have mixed reviews about this film because of the original. This is nothing like Silence of the Lambs. In Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal goes up against a FBI trainee and successfully gets inside her head. In this film he goes up against the man that put him behind bars, Will Graham. Ed Norton plays Will and does a good job. In all honesty Will is a important character that really doesn't get a lot of mention..even in the book. To get a very good look about Will's relationship with Hannibal, watch the NBC TV show "Hannibal". There's 3 seasons you can buy. If your a fan of the films, I highly recommend the TV show. This movie is about a psychopath called "The Tooth Fairy" but he prefers "Red Dragon". Years after Will put Hannibal away, he needs Hannibal's help to catch him. Anthony Hopkins does a awesome job, as does Ed Norton. I highly recommend you buy this movie, if your a fan of the series. You will love this.

Usually when you look at a film series, you think that the first one is really good, the second one is okay and the third one is just terrible. The Hannibal film series is flipped, the second one is terrible and Red Dragon is actually okay. This is the sequel to Silence of the Lambs that I would have liked to see rather than the Ridley Scott directed Hannibal (uggh). We have Anthony Hopkins back as Mr. Lecter and we all know he's going to kill it in the role. So let's talk about Edward Norton, he's really good in the role, we know that Norton is a great actor (Fight Club, American History X). He brings the same level of his acting talent to this film but he doesn't steal the shoe like Hopkins always does. It gets a little slow in parts, it's not perfect but it still is a better film than Hannibal. Keep in mind that this the real sequel to The Silence of the Lambs. It should of been that, Red Dragon and then Hannibal. And it was directed by Brett Ratner of all people, the Rush Hour guy and the one who killed the X Men franchise with the Last Stand. Oh well, at least he's got this.
  • Better Than Manhunter.

Don't get me wrong... I enjoy Manhunter despite it being a very dated film. Red Dragon is more accurate to the book and that is what I like about this movie.

I thought Manhunter sucked. It was very cheesy and kinda boring. It seems people say they like the original just because its the original. Nobody cares if the book was better, this is itunes not a library. Red Dragon is an amazing movie with great acting and plenty of suspense.
  • Some movies don

Where to begin? Character for character, Manhunter wins any comparison of these two films. Brian Cox was brilliant as the original Lecter. The score wins. Tom Noonan as Dolarhyde; Stephen Lang as Freddie Lounds - all the way down the roster. Did not mean this to be a comparison review, but the whole time I was watching this, I wanted to be re-watching Manhunter, so... I did. Red Dragon proves that a great story needs a great director. That is the only reason a cast of this caliber - Ralph Fiennes and P S Hoffman! Emily Watson (Who is wonderful in this, but even so... .) - could not rise to match the original. Sorry for the toggling; just cannot help myself. This is OK; Manhunter is quite wonderful. That being said, this is beautifully shot. I can recommend as good way to spend a little time, but Manhunter a better way to spend a little time. Edward Norton has too light a touch, is too ferociously smart; Petersen was ferociously emotionally engaged, humbled, and relentless. Will stop now; just an opinion.
