Description

In one of the most anticipated movies of 1994, boxoffice superstar Mel Gibson ("Lethal Weapon," et. al.) and two-time Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster ("The Accused," "Silence of the Lambs") are a dapper gambler and a seductive con woman in this slick Western based on the classic TV series. James Garner ("Murphy"s Romance," TV's "Rockford Files") -- the original Maverick -- James Coburn ("The Magnificent Seven," "Young Guns II"), Graham Greene ("Northern Exposure") and a slew of country singers co-star in this film by Richard Donner ("Superman," "Lethal Weapon" trilogy). The New York Times calls this "fast, funny, full of action...[it's] "Lethal Weapon" meets "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." The Hollywood Reporter calls it "a fast-shuffling escapade of antic wit...a delightfully appealing, brainy comedy...[a] royal flush" and Variety says it's "exuberant...a whole new generation is about to discover the charm, wit and fun of Maverick."

If you enjoy the stars of this movie, a comedy with endless twists and turns, you have to see this movie. It is amazing! This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and I am not young and have watched a lot.

Don't be fooled, this is not a good movie. I thought with Mel Gibson and Richard Donner it would be descent. Intead, it looks like somone dropped the ball big time..this movie is a complete bomb, no redeeming qualities. Bad acting, bad writing, bad directing.

This movie is okay but it never really hits any kind of stride. As Maverick was an ongoing TV series, one could have expected sequels, but the fact that there were none tells the story.

You see this is how you do a movie adaptation of a TV series. You get yourself a compotent director, a good cast, and a good script. I applaud Richard Donner for making this fun adaptation of the classic 60's TV series. Mel Gibson, before going bat-crap crazy in the 2K's, was a fitting choice for the role of Bret Maverick. I am glad that James Garner, the original Maverick, got to have a part in this film. I was also glad that one of my favorite actors James Coburn was in this film too. Jodie Foster also does great with her role. The story feels like a great adaptation of the original TV series. Now......why didn't Barry Sonnenfield take this film as an example of how to do an adaptation of a TV western when he did the utter fail that is Wild Wild West? (I am seriously hoping for the series to come out on iTunes soon). I recommend this movie to fans of the original 60's TV western and western fans in general. So, check it out.
