Description

The year was 1966. A little-known series called Star Trek beams up. Valley of the Dolls is the hot book. Half of all TVs sold are color sets. And in Paradise, Hawaiian Style, Elvis takes to the skies over the island paradise of Kauai. He's a partner in a helicopter charter service. Romance, naturally, is in the air for the King... but his business may be grounded. A threatened suspension of his pilot's license means he may have to kiss his assets goodbye.

It’s a great enjoyable film. The soundtrack isn’t the best and it has a lot of similarities to the other Hal films. But if you love Elvis you will like this. It’s funny at times and has a great setting. It doesn’t even matter the story or the role he plays. He brings charm to every movie and makes it interesting to watch as a fan.

Regardless to what everyone says: Most of Elvis' movies were well produced, had a nice soundtrack or a good cast. Some were great (Jailhouse Rock, Flaming Star, King Creole), some really good, and some weren't. But at least they were all entertaining in one way or another. This one here, Elvis' second to last movie with producer Hal Wallis, isn't. To be honest it's nothing but bad in any aspect. While it tries to pick up the Hawaiian location, feeling and (of course) success of its predecessors Blue Hawaii (1961) and Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), it doesn't work in any way. Elvis is pretty bulky, pale and obviously bored to death while flying around in a helicopter with a bunch of dogs singing "I’d find me a pink little poodle / And lose my noodle over her" (A Dog's Life, one of his three worst songs ever). Most of the time he looks like an extra in his own movie. TV-director Michael Moore (not THE Michael Moore) doesn't make any use of the Hawaiian scenery, the soundtrack is cr*p, the cast awful with Donna Butterworth giving the most annoying child role in any Elvis movie (and there're many!). Whenever she appears and is about to sing you'll know why the fast forward button was invented. Honestly: I'm a big fan. Unlike many other fans I even like camp classics like Kissin' Cousins or Harum Scarum. I think Stay Away, Joe is one of his finest performances ever and hilarious to watch. But "Paradise" is too much, even for die-hard Elvis-fans. Change your money and flush it down the drain. It'll be more fun than this.
