Description

Steve Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, TV's The Office), Hollywood's leading funnyman, stars in the hilarious comedy that's bursting with charm -- a movie you'll watch again and again. Advice columnist Dan Burns (Carell) is an expert on relationships, but somehow struggles to succeed as a brother, a son and a single parent to three precocious daughters. Things get even more complicated when Dan finds out that the woman he falls in love with is actually his brother's new girlfriend. Carell is joined by a brilliant all-star supporting cast, including Juliette Binoche, Dane Cook, John Mahoney and Dianne Wiest, for a heartfelt, fun-filled comedy that's "laugh-out-loud funny" -- Steve Oldfield, FOX.

It's a romantic comedy/family movie, so adjust your expectations and you'll enjoy it. Yeah, there are contrived parts, yeah, it doesn't get too adult/mature, and yeah, the family might be an idealized family, and not every scene is laugh-out-loud funny. The whole film is kind of about feeling deeply, so it's not everyone's cup of tea. It isn't meant to be hilarious-funny, and it even meta-comments on its own brand of story/humor in like the first 10-15 mins (Binoche's lines in the bookstore). It has shortcomings but those don't mean it doesn't also say something real and meaningful. Anyone with a family that is too well-meaning, sibling rivalry, major grief, life disappointments, who has ever fallen in love hard and fast, or with the "wrong" person and been forced to endure the torture of being around them for whatever reason--any such person can easily identify with Dan. I'd recommend this film for a rainy day. And this is a P.S.er, but wow, the misogyny expressed in the comments about Binoche's appearance... Even if I agreed with the assessment, last time I checked, Carrell wasn't exactly pinup material...yet there's crickets regading his appearance. Guess this review should include a disclaimer too that a non-Victoria's Secret-angel, older woman gets the lion's share of screentime over the younger Emily Blunt. If that concerns you, this movie is not for you...

I dunno it may not be the best movie you have ever seen, but honestly I love this movie. I think its funny, unique, and well acted. Juliet B is super sexy in this film and Steve Carrell seems like a real person and not some weirdo character. I just think this is a really good, family movie that captures an awkward situation and makes it believable.

Depression level: 6 - Comedy Level:5 - Awkward level: 8 - Drama Level:4 - Action level: 1 - Scarry level: 0 - Cry level: 3 Recommended for: People with Daughters, lovers of Steve Carrel outside the Office, and people looking for second chances. The cast sheds a new light on an otherwise tried concept as Carell looks to distinguish himself away from Micheal Scott and Brick. Put the kids to bed///get comfy on a plane///pop that bottle of wine that has been sitting there ---- Don't buy but rent Dan In Real Life

We LOVE this movie--it's funny and real. I love Steve Carell's other movies--he's a great comedian---but this movie is definitely different than 40YOV. It's a great movie to add to your collection--we still watch it every few months. =)

I was blown away by this film. Steve Carrell is just perfect, adding just the right amount of character and self deprecation without the neediness. This film is greater than the sum of its parts, and will exceed your expectations.
