Master and Commander is a great, old fashioned tale about a crew sailing the Atlantic, during Napoleon’s reign. Russell Crowe is perfect, and the direction for this is masterful. It is a guy film, but it’s extremely gripping. I still think about the closing shot all of the time. Just go see it!!!!

One of the most beautiful, historically accurate, brilliantly acted and scored movies of all time. Everything about it works flawlessly. Aubrey/Maturin are one of the great friendships in literature and Crow and Bettany portray them to perfection. I would love to see a sequel, but I can’t imagine producing a film of this caliber is inexpensive and the general movie going public is far to dim to appreciate it. As I mentioned the score is wonderful, but the use of La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid No. 6 Op. 30 makes the film soar to a higher level and the original pieces hold their own with the classics. I can not recommend this film enough. Peter Wier’s masterpiece.

I purchased this movie for download several years ago and have enjoyed it. Now, there have been EULA & DRM updates within iTunes updates which have rendered my version of the film unplayable. I feel cheated. This is NOT the only one in my purchase inventory that has become unplayable. Love the film. Hate download products from Apple and elsewhere that can wave their magic computer codes over one’s purchases then tell you, “tough luck - buy it again”. Well, the joke is on Apple. I’ll buy NO MORE hardware, software, music, TV or movie programming from you. You have a license to sell, profit and steal back from your customers. There must be a more derogatory name for that than “thief”.

Singular in its inimitable quality, this movie speaks to the heart of man. To be an “able seaman” says as much about what a man had to know in order to sail one of these great ships as much as it speaks to what man has irrevocably lost.

The realism, humor, courage, spirit, intelligence and class in this movie are all exceptional. It is a real work of art that is also rousing and thrilling—a rare combination.

I have actually passed on this movie several times, but recently decided to give it a chance. I’m glad I did. I like Russell Crow and he did not disappoint with his performance in this film. It was entertaining and exciting and also had some personal moments. It was worth watching and I’m glad I finally did.

As someone who has read the entire M&C books series (yes, all 20) and loved every single one, this movie is a godsend. The action is tense and exciting, the characters are spot on, and if this movie doesn't have the best footage of tall ships I don't know what does. We need more films like it, simply put.

I like old movies! The friendship of the captain and the doctor were superb. The crew showed fearless action but they had to witness cruel punishment. I love the details and how crew works and simply lives during this time. I love the actors and the story.
