Description

The misadventures begin when Miles (Paul Giamatti), an un-recovered divorcé and would-be novelist with a wine fixation, decides to gift old college buddy and washed-up actor Jack (Thomas Haden Church) with a celebratory trip to the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley the week before Jack's wedding. The two couldn't be an odder couple. Jack is an over-sexed charmer; Miles is a sad-sack worrier. Jack is looking for his "last taste of freedom"; Miles just wants to taste perfection in a bottle. Jack is fine with cheap Merlot; Miles pines for the elusive, perfect Pinot. Indeed, the only thing they seem to share in common is the same heady mix of failed ambitions and fading youth. And yet, as they make their way up the coast, Miles and Jack soon find themselves drowning in wine and women. Both men careen dangerously and comically toward mid-life crises. Now, the wedding approaches and with it the certainty that Miles and Jack won't make it back to Los Angeles unscathed or unchanged...if they get back there at all.

I do have to say it is a very funny movie; just wish they had kept it a bit less bizarre & raunchy (ending). As to pricing, is my main reason for input here (in 2019); I already own a Blu-ray & an older DVD copy, so why would I even consider buying this online copy for $8 ? It was priced quickly yesterday for $5 & I was considering it at that price, but I might not have bought it even for that. Just something to consider when you keep many of these old movies up to & over $8 at this point in time. Even a movie that you like a lot, just how often will you ever watch it at the most? Twice a year? Or twice a decade? And I own over 600 movies on here (thanks to iTunes/Apple for the low prices!)

Honestly I have yet to drink Merlot since watching this film, that also happens to be my favorite film. I enjoyed both this and the novel as I consider them two different works of art with the same story. This work of art inspired me on a personal, I've dealt with depression over the loss of my with, and I'm in the process of starting over in Temecula wine country. Pinot anyone?

I had heard such great things about this movie and the reviews looked good. Unfortunately, what the movie shows is a depressing journey into shallow commitment, drinking to forget, and friendship based on convenient college history. The movie was not funny but left me with a sense of sadness for characters that actually were living lives of desperation and deception. Wine country is so much better than binge drinking and one night stands.

We love a good story. We love good wine. We love beautiful countryside. This left a lot to be desired for all three.

This movie has been one of my favorites since it was first released. If you enjoy sophisticated humor then you will love this film. It is about so much more than just the jokes.
