Description

Barton Fink (John Turturro) is a Broadway playwright lured to Hollywood with the promise of untold riches by a boorish studio chieftain.  Despising the film capital and everything it stands for, Fink comes down with an acute case of writer's block.  He is looked after by a secretary who has been acting as a ghost writer for an alcoholic screenwriter.  Also keeping tabs on Fink is a garrulous traveling salesman, the most likeable, stable character in the picture.  Then comes the plot twist to end all plot twists, which plunges Barton Fink into a surreal nightmare.

  • Too Open-ended

This movie is just like A Serious Man, amazing cinematography, a great dark comedy, and fun to watch but so much doesn't resolve that it just leaves you empty after. A good movie but too nonsensical.

The Coen brothers have created a real gem. This movie is very deep and profound and therefore some people may be turned off by its complexity, but if you are looking for a great movie with substance then you must check out Barton Fink.

This movie deserves way better then 3 and a half start so I felt I just had to help out as much as I could, which would be to give it the 5 it so rightly deserves. A story woven as only the Coen Brothers know how.

Count me as one of the latter. The movie is -- how shall one put it? Ah, well...yeah...the movie is -- in a word -- "stupid."

No wonder this movie swept the Cannes film festival. It has fantastic acting, an intriguing plot, and great set design. The characters are quirky, it demonstrates writer's block brilliantly, and it shows what it must be like for a sucessful playwright to be thrown into the movie business. The Coen Brothers did a brilliant job with this.
  • One of the Best Movies... Ever.

This film is not for the intellectual lightweight. Which is funny, because it's all about the "common" man. For most it will be confusing, disturbing and unsatisfying. It's not all wrapped up in a typical hollywood ending for the masses. It demands more from its audience. I've never seen a movie so rich in visual and auditory allegory. From Barton trying on the "common man's" shoes and breaking down in tears, to the strange glue that is keeping the wallpaper on the walls and oozing out of John Goodman's ears. Every frame of this movie is genius. It changed my life when I first witnessed it in 1991. If you loved "Armageddon" you'll HATE this movie.
  • Worst Movie Ever Made

I'm not sure what most of these reviews are talking about. Maybe I'm just not intellectual enough (or maybe the rest of you are just getting taken for fools), but that was without a doubt the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. The characters were stupid and unbelieveable. There was NO plotline whatsoever. I can't even believe that I am wasting my time writing this (except that I feel as though I am doing a service to mankind by warning them about this movie). I really don't have anything else I can say!

Barton Fink is pure genius. there's almost nothing bad about the movie itself. the acting was Oscar-worthy without a doubt. but it may not be too lovable for everyone. i personally thought there were some quite disturbing moments, just like Fargo, and it had some slow-ish segments. overall, i really enjoyed it though. its probably my favorite Coen brothers movie other than The Big Lebowski.
