Description

Adapted from William Shakespeare, the film tells the story of two couples--confirmed bachelor Benedick and caustic Beatrice, and young Claudio and innocent Hero. Playful bickering defines one couple, whereas romance and betrayal describe the other.

This movie was good overall, it lacked quite a bit of details from the play itself. I was yelled at while watching the movie in class. I would bring the price down on this movie to 5$.

There are no major problems with the adaptation that I can see, and it's a job well done. But there is also not much to get excited about, no pun intended. The truly outstanding performance comes from Denzel Washington. I understand there are a lot of Branagh and Thompson fans out there, but it is Washington who truly makes you forget all about the archaic nature of the English you are hearing. Also, Kate Beckinsale's performance here deserves more attention than it has received. Sure, Branagh was seen as the go-to guy for Shakespeare in the nineties, but considering what Baz Luhrman managed to do just a few years later, it should be acknowledged that this is still a fairly conservative, safe, and thus a somewhat stale approach. Which is also why I have no interest in seeing Branagh's version of The Murder on the Orient Express, unless it's available on a long flight. Branagh excels at his craft, but it's a craft he excels at.

I never fully appreciated Shakespeare until I watched this. Kenneth Branagh absolutely nailed the character and brought him to life. I was laughing out loud!!

Branagh outdoes himself in this splendid adaptation of a Shakespearean classic and brings new life to this old play. Ms. Thompson's Beatrice and Branagh's Benedick are the real stars of the show in some ways. Their banter is made more humorous (and perhaps more realistic!) by the fact that they were then a couple. Washington, though in some ways a surprising choice for Don Pedro, does his usual excellent work of bringing his character alive and making him convincing. Mr. Reeves, however, was a bit disappointing as the evil half-brother, though he had the right look of sullen brooding and malevolence. Of course, his material was thinner and he had less time on-screen and less lines to develop his character. Not being familiar with his other work, I am not sure if this was a factor of the role or just him. Briers' Leonato and Brian Blessed's Antonio were well played. It was interesting to see Briers, well known for comedy, in a role that required a serious side. Keaton's cameo interpretation of Dogberry was rather strange (as might be expected from Keaton), as was Ben Elton's role as his side-kick. Both were more than a bit manic - but given their backgrounds and other work they have done, it was not surprising. (Elton is not as well known to American audiences, but he is a brilliant stand-up comic, and a comedy writer of considerable talent.) All in all, a refreshing and enjoyable reprise.

before i saw this film i was a bit leary about it, i had seen this Shakespearean play "Much Ado About Nothing" acted out at a local theatre and it didn't really impress me. But i must say i was just blown away by this film, it gave this story a LOT more depth and color than i had seen before!!!!!!!! not only did i find myself watching it AGAIN, i also found myself running around to all the local stores trying to find this movie and buy it!!!!!! well, i eventually found it, and now i don't think even a week goes by that i don't actually sit down and watch this movie at least one time through!!!! this film is DEFINITELY what Shakespeare had in mind for his great story "Much Ado About Nothing" BUY IT, its worth your time AND money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
