Description

1933. Gareth Jones (James Norton) is an ambitious young journalist who gained fame after his report on being the first foreign journalist to fly with Hitler. Now, intrigued by the Soviet “utopia”, Jones travels to Moscow, where he meets Ada Brooks (Vanessa Kirby), a British journalist, who reveals that the truth behind the regime is being violently repressed. Hearing murmurs of government-induced famine, kept secret by the Soviet censors, Jones travels clandestinely to Ukraine, where he witnesses the atrocities of man-made starvation – millions left to starve. Deported back to London, Jones publishes an article revealing his findings, quickly denied by Western journalists in Moscow under the Kremlin’s pressure, including Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Walter Duranty (Peter Sarsgaard). As death threats mount, Jones has to fight for the truth. Meeting a young George Orwell, he shares his findings… helping inspire the seminal novel Animal Farm.

  • Rancid KKKrap (minus one star)

Pure (dull) propaganda film which tries to excuse the right-wing lunatics and tries to rehabilitate fascist garbage. Yes, Stalin was evil. We all know that. But this is pure propaganda to try to somehow make nazis and their fellow right-wing fascist scum seem less evil than they were, are, and always will be.

This movie was great and extremely relevant. NYtimes is still garbage with blood on their hands. The only bad reviews are people who don’t want you to see the truth
  • A paradox of a movie

I REALLY want to like this movie. Stalin is possibly the most evil person in history (certainly, he is more evil than Hitler, who was more flamboyant in his evil). It has taken years and years for Hollywood to shake off the Communist influence that Stalin planted there, and it makes me glad to know that these stories are being told. We MUST tell stories about Stalin's evil because we are seeing the same kind of thing today, especially if you look at what China is doing. The problem with this movie is that it doesn't really have a plot. At least, it doesn't have 2 hours of plot. It has about an hour of plot with an hour of mood-setting. Meaning that it's not really a good movie from a story-telling perspective.

Amazing that so few know about this holocaust. An important film that blows the lid off this tragic event. Thoughtfully directed, capable acting. Hopefully more films on the Holodomor to come.

When I see a 5 star review by a guy who recommends the movie that believes Hitler was “oppressed”, it makes me wonder.

First, high marks for action, suspense, and writing. We were never bored. Second, superb cinematography - just beautifully shot. Finally, I’m a historian who hates inaccurate items, and this movie does a great job staying true to the story. Phenomenal!
  • As important today as when it happened

When you realize who Walter Durante is, and what the NY Times helped cover up, it puts new meaning to what we see going on in the modern day. The media and their masters defended communism then, and they are doing it now.

The film tells a story of a part of history that is glossed over. The performances from the main leads are phenomenal and it is beautifully shot. It’s a tad long but the story, performances, and direction from the iconic Agnieszka Holland makes up for that one issue and is well worth 5 stars.

Absorbing story, great performances and an important part of history despite the artistic license taken.
