Description

There was no “master plan.” In fact, there was no plan at all. Yet Chicago's pioneering record label Wax Trax! Records launched careers for a legion of bands (Ministry, Front 242, KMFDM, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, and many more) and ushered in a whole new genre of music known as "industrial" before flaming out in epic style. At the core were founders Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher, two music-obsessed fans who just wanted to share their passion without compromise. Featuring interviews with key artists from Front 242, Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, KMFDM, Throbbing Gristle and many more.

  • A trip down memory lane

I was lucky enough to see the documentary during one of the special screenings / concerts along with Q&A with some of the great people who made this happen. The documentary exceeded all of my expectations. Growing up in Chicagoland, Wax Trax! was an important part of my teenage years. I spent a lot of time hanging around the shop, discovering and buying music, often getting the chance to meet people from some of the bands. I remember how welcoming and open the environment was, but the film opened my eyes to just how much of a family everyone behind the scenes was. The soundtrack is amazing (go buy that too...), but the film is even better. If you were at all a follower of Wax Trax! back in the day, you know how all of this ends. But the storytelling in the film is incredible—the archival film from events over the years and the interviews are masterfully editted to make this a memorable, emotional trip. If you love industrial music and the scene that has followed it, you have Jim and Dannie to thank for it. You will not be disappointed. I can't recommend this enough.

It was an era, for sure. Watching this documentary was a trip down memory lane for a lot of us who lived it, and it holds up quite well. The music, the emotions, the stories, the attitude, the love...it is all packaged nicely. Thank you Wax Trax for making this happen, and helping us once again relive that period of life. It was magical!

A terrific and revealing documentary on a legendary genre-defining record store and subsequent label. This is a must-see for anyone who is, or ever was, a fan of the wax trax industrial music artists who created a community and cultural movement through their music. Interviews with kmfdm, ministry, front 243, FLA, Chris and Cosey... just awesome

I saw this documentary twice in film showing over the past year, and I'm very thankful that it exists. I started listening to Wax Trax music back in 1989, when a friend gave me a copy of Front 242's Back Catalogue. Eventually I was taking the Wax Trax mail order form to record stores to use as a shopping list. I've loved this music for a long time, and now learining about Jim and Dannie is only making me appreciate Wax Trax even more. I've so happy Julia Nash was able to put this together, this love letter to Jim and Dannie, and to Wax Trax itself. This is definately a great music documentary, so very worth watching and owning if you ever felt like a misfit and yet found a good song or album that said "you are not alone." Wax Trax was for all of us misfits, and this documentary is a wonderful way to link us all together.

I had the privilege of viewing this documentary at its premiere for the Nashville Film Festival. I grew up on the Wax Trax! “ sound”.... It defined my formative years in high school and college. Bands like Front 242, Ministry, KMFDM, Thrill Kill Kult and RevCo were the soundtrack for my life. In fact, I continue to follow these bands to the present day! This film doesn’t disappoint! With rare footage and behind the scenes stories from its humble beginnings in Denver, Colorado, and later to Chicago, to literally taking over the club and dance floors worldwide, Wax Trax! defined and created a culture whose legacy continues to this day. It’s no “accident” Julia Nash and scores of others have put blood, sweat and tears to film...obviously a labor of love!
