  • Definitely not PG-13!

My family rented this film to watch thinking it was about a WW2 soldier with PTSD. Nope! We were met face to face with a cross dressing lunatic who’s a so-called artist. There was a ton of adult content that made us think why this got a PG-13 rating. Sounded like the guy was a total creep. We just couldn’t finish watching it.

I first heard about Mark Hogancamp many years ago (prior to the release of the documentary in 2010) and I have been following his story ever since. As a photographer, myself, I can appreciate the desire to communicate with others through art. Mr. Hogancamp’s ability to translate his experiences into such visceral stories is utterly astounding. This movie, when seen through the lens of the trauma he’s faced, makes much more sense. If you remind yourself that everything in the film is a metaphor for the experiences in Mr. Hogancamp’s real life, the film shines. You can see the love and respect the filmmakers have for Mr. Hogancamp and his narrative. The firm is not meant to be taken at face-value; it is a deeply moving psychological exploration of a man who has faced incredible trauma and who has used his art as a therapeutic device. Mr. Hogancamp never intended to share his stories with the world—he shot them for himself and it shows. This film is not about spectacle, it’s about recovery. If you can allow yourself to understand what he must be feeling and experiencing on a daily basis, I think you’ll find the movie as uplifting as I did.

This movie started off being horrible and I tried so hard to give it a chance but I didn't even get through half of it before I turned it off. Characters and dialogue were so iritating/abrasive, the story was so disjointed, slow, and not interesting. I found it unbearable to watch. Maybe one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Anyone who’s given the movie under three stars has never suffered a traumatic event, this is really accurate and the cast is perfect for the roles.

I so wanted to like this movie. From the early previews, I thought it sounded like a great story. Then I found out it was a true story - even better. Then I saw the movie... Ugh. What a huge disappointment! Hollywood screw it up again with a massive SJW message. Lame story, worse characters, and poor production. It was just terrible.

If you’re into main characters that have a high heel fetish and a feminist message, this movie is for you. I found it too SJW to enjoy and couldn’t finish it.
