Ballad of Lefty Brown

I was first introduced to this movie through "True West" magazine in which the readers had chosen this film as the best Western for 2018. Perhaps I should have thought for a moment about if any other westerns had been made in 2018. The fact is, the movie is beautifully shot (actually shot on film!) and the Director and DP showed exceptional skill in the construct of each scene. The costuming was perfect and the casting was strong. Bill Pulman did a laudable job in capturing the "Lefty" character who came off as a cross between a more serious Gabby Hayes with a Walter Brennan limp. HIs flawed character was interesting...thoughh oddly, not very likable...which made him as a less than compelling protagonist. The rest of the cast did the best they could with the script they were given. Particulalry of note was Jim Caviezel who elevated the character far beyond the words he was given to utter. The script's sequencing was surprisingly disjointed and at times corny and contrived. This was the achilles heal of the film...and it was glaring. I wanted to love this movies...but I couldn't. Unfortunately, the continuity and poor writing simply overwhelmed the beauty of the piece.
Disappointing

Failed from the opening scene to the last to hold my attention. Actually put me to sleep. Not a bad plot just poorly put together.
Boring

Jim Carviezel is in it. But his name does not appear in the Cast and Crew in the iTunes description. I guess it was so bad he wanted his name left out.
Movie is extremely slow. I don’t mind slow film if it has fantastic cinematography or scenery or script. This has none of those. And what little action there is, it was not exciting action at all. I almost fell asleep twice through this movie.
Two thumbs down.
Surprised...a Story of a Hero Cowboy

A slow and steady movie with actors, not special effects. A feel good story about loyalty, resiliency and commitment. Really enjoyed it. Thanks
Fascinating

I’ve seen a lot of movies. While the characters in most movies are intriguing none ever struck such a chord with me like lefty. He’s such a fascinating character. Most people will say oh the acting is bad, that’s because they don’t understand that’s literally how lefty is suppose to talk Act and think. My grandfather thought in a similar way. The acting is actually really good, and while the plot sounds generic it’s the journey and how lefty with his fascinating personality deals with the scenario that makes it unique in its own right. Overall brilliant movie and definitely deserves 5 out of 5 stars

I was looking for a good western...unfortunately this one didn’t live up to expectations...just wasn’t it...
One of the greatest movies I've ever seen. Bill Pullman is amazing!

Bill Pullman was exceptional!
he deserves an Oscar (probably too white for that now)....but I was rivited and his part in this, which was so beleivable, and came off so real that you could feel his pain. Life was hard in the late 1800's, but this movie showed how good people have guts and hang in there even when everyone wants you dead. STELLAR cast and awesome directing made this my favorite movie of the year by far!
Strange and Convoluted

Lefty Brown is not a likeable character; inept and self absorbed he never really achieves a transformation which makes him worthy of redemption. I am a big fan of Bill Pullman, but this was hard to watch. Lefty was a mumbling and stumbling poor wretch surrounded by a myriad of one dimensional predictable old west type bad guys. Bill Pullman's acting talent could not overcome this barely fleshed out script. Rent do not buy so as not to regret the $ or time spent dedicated to watching this drivel.
