Description

The screeching strings, the plunging knife, the slow zoom out from a lifeless eyeball: in 1960, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho changed film history forever with its taboo-shattering shower scene. With 78 camera set-ups and 52 edits over the course of 3 minutes, Psycho redefined screen violence, set the stage for decades of slasher films to come, and introduced a new element of danger to the moviegoing experience. Aided by a roster of filmmakers, critics, and fans—including Guillermo del Toro, Bret Easton Ellis, Jamie Lee Curtis, Eli Roth, and Peter Bogdanovich—director Alexandre O. Philippe pulls back the curtain on the making and influence of this cinematic game changer, breaking it down frame by frame and unpacking Hitchcock's dense web of allusions and double meanings. The result is an enthralling piece of cinematic detective work.

Probably the most influential scene ever shot in any film dissected frame by frame . Simply brilliant and what a great watch 78/52 is. I thought I knew this film backwards and forwards but this doc stands on its own - fun, entertaining, informative. From Hitchcock's brilliant direction to Bernard Hermann's legendary score that has influenced anyone and everyone - a film lover, fan boy, geek out that is just so great.

If you like Alfred Hitchcock, you are going to love 78/52. The movie digs into the minutiae of the shower scene from PSYCHO with a mindblowing exploration of the significance of the scene in pop culture, the technique that went into creating the scene, the ingenious details that Hitch included in the scene that add subtext and meaning, and so much more. The best thing about it is that you might think this deep-dive into film history and technique would be dry, but the director has crafted an entertaining film that zips right by. Don't miss this movie.
