Description

In 17th Century Amsterdam, an orphaned girl (Alicia Vikander) is forcibly married to a rich and powerful merchant (Christoph Waltz) – an unhappy "arrangement" that saves her from poverty. After her husband commissions a portrait, she begins a passionate affair with the painter (Dane DeHaan), a struggling young artist. Seeking to escape the merchant’s ever-reaching grasp, the lovers risk everything and enter the frenzied tulip bulb market, with the hope that the right bulb will make a fortune and buy their freedom.

I am very glad that I ignored the Rotten Tomatoes score and the reviews here. The film is stunningly shot, wonderfully acted and full of truly special moments. Yes, there is quite a bit going on plot wise. It is curious though, that any of it should be suggested to be left out, when you see the end result. To all involved in the film, it was wonderful.

i really thought it had something going - i thought everything was going to find its way together in end....oddly, the ending felt a little blah....and a few scenes that were unrealistic - like sending zach to get bulb....

Another story about how adultery is okay. So nice to get another cliche romance movie. Hollywood stop being lazy and think up something original for once.
